CORNELIA HEDIGER

Doppelgänger

MAY 4 - JUNE 15, 2019

OPENING Reception: SATURDAY, MAY 4, 5:00 - 7:00 PM

Pentimenti Gallery continues its spring season with a solo exhibition by CORNELIA HEDIGER.

For Doppelgänger, Cornelia Hediger presents a series of works consisting of multiple carefully choreographed, individual, full-frame photographs assembled into single artworks. Each assemblage is constructed of six to nine photographs and utilizes a grid system that serves to maintain the photographic integrity of each photograph while allowing Hediger to exaggerate and emphasize certain spatial areas.

For these complex pictorial narratives, Hediger turns the literal and figurative lens on herself as both photographer and model, acting out internal struggles in the external world. These ‘doppelgängers’ seem to represent ideas of hope and despair, good and bad, past and present, and often times face each other, watching and wondering if the other is trustworthy. Her subjects appear elongated, fragmented or distorted, and live within surreal, timeless settings dominated by dramatically rich, intoxicating color.

In her own words, “The Doppelgänger series of photographs are pictorial narratives that explore internal human emotions, notions of the uncanny, the subconscious/conscious mind, the ego and the alter ego. The narrative structure itself is based upon and utilizes the concept of the Doppelgänger—specifically as understood within Germanic literature. In this context, the notion of the Doppelgänger is understood as a ghostly double or apparition of a living person, widely assumed to be sinister and a harbinger of bad luck, but also highly ambiguous, thus presenting a psychological dilemma.”

Cornelia Hediger received her BFA and MFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ. Her work as been exhibited nationally and internationally at museums and institutions: Mart Photography Center, Yekaterinburg, Russia; Akron Art Museum, Akron, OH; ICH, Kunstraum Sylt, Germany; Lishui International Photography Festival, China; Center For Photography at Woodstock, Woodstock, NY; Anita S.
