Pentimenti Gallery welcomes spring with a solo exhibition of the work of Ted Larsen. This is the artist’s second solo exhibition at the gallery.

Ted Larsen’s work strives to build a connection between pure form and a pedestrian materiality that references the toll of time. His work responds to the archetypical aesthetic purity of minimalism and counters it with pieces that bear signs of wear and even an implied utility. The objects are wholly of Earth, utilizing salvaged materials, and therefore imply a previous iteration: a sense of transformation and possibility that could never exist in the classically minimal.

In Words Fail Me Larsen’s work centers color or the lack thereof, and elevates this presence or absence to painterly subjectivity. The bright yolky yellow of Larger Half defines the character of the work, while the avocado green of Working Vacation complicates the multifaceted piece and draws the viewer into its central point. Meanwhile, the monochromatic pieces converse with each other in their own language, set starkly apart from the rest of the work.

The industrial quality of the work is inherent in the commercially viable color schemes, the honest and open materiality, and the methods of procurement and production by the artist.

These aspects of the work ground it firmly in reality; one in which humankind’s impact on the environment is undeniable and stark.

Ted Larsen is an internationally exhibiting artist and Pollock-Krasner Foundation recipient with a BA from Northern Arizona University. His work has been exhibited widely in private foundations and museums in the US, including the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, Boulder, CO; Strohl Art Center, Chautauqua Institution, Chautauqua, NY; Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, Summit, NJ; Galveston Art Center, Galveston, TX; New Mexico Museum of Art, Santa Fe, NM; The Albuquerque Museum, Albuquerque, NM; The Amarillo Museum of Art, Amarillo, NM, The Spiva Center for the Arts, Joplin, MO, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, PA. He has received grants from the Surdna Foundation and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, as well as residencies with the Edward F.
