KEVIN FINKLEA
stacked possibilities | nevus, a beauty mark | raised surface | stream of possible locations | shifted locales | shifted points of view | a possibility raised, then deadly | unseen danger.

These works on paper are part of an ongoing study on Finklea’s vision and a tool for his understanding, monitoring, and treatment of uveal melanoma. Painted on handmade paper, these works are intended to be quick meditations on balance and dualities. Each drawing is done instinctively, without planning and in full color.

LAUREN MABRY
Lauren Mabry considers each cylinder to be a round painting. She keeps these structures elemental to serve as a dimensional, 360º uninterrupted canvas. The juicy characteristics of the glazes are opposed by hard-cut, linear edges of still, calculated, forms. When viewed in profile the cylinders resemble a flattened plane, which blurs the boundary between object and image. She uses form as a means to reiterate the psychological depth of the surface, but also to emphasize the important presence that objects have.

Lauren Mabry received her BFA from Kansas City Art Institute and her MFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Her work has been exhibited at select museums and institutions: The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO; Jingdezhen International Studio, Jingdezhen, China; GoggleWorks Center for the Arts, Reading, PA; Gaya Ceramic Design Center, Ubud, Bali, Indonesia; Zanesville Prize Exhibition, International Juried Exhibition, Seiler’s Gallery, Zanesville, OH; Kimball Art Center, Salt Lake City, UT; Daum Museum of Contemporary Art, Sedalia, MO; Strohl Art Center, Chautauqua, NY; National Council on Education for Ceramic Arts, Kansas City, MO; Grand Arts Building curated for Kansas City Art Institute, Kansas City, MO; The Clay Studio, Philadelphia, PA; Lux Center for the Arts, Lincoln, NE; New Art Center, Newtown, MA; Raphael Prize Exhibition, Society for Contemporary Craft, Pittsburgh, PA; Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee, WI; NCECA Biennial, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Houston, TX; The Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, Omaha, NE; Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Overland Park, KS; The Archie Bray Foundation for Ceramic Arts, Helena, MT; among others. Her work is represented in permanent collections at Fuller Craft Museum, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Daum Museum of Contemporary Art, Sheldon Museum of Art, The Archie Bray Foundation for Ceramic Arts, and Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art. She is the recipient of individual grants from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage (2015), The Independence Foundation Grant (2014), and the NCECA Emerging Artist Award (2014).

ERIK SPEHN
Approximately six months ago, corresponding with the beginning of the pandemic, Erik Spehn began to work on a group of small, non-rectangular panels, the unconventional shapes of which seemingly reflect the uneasiness of the current times.

The irregularity of the shapes, the red color, and the diminutive size of each painting are also reminiscent of the human heart, however, which conversely conveys a sense of calm centeredness, certainly a requirement to successfully navigate the difficulties we are now collectively facing.

Erik Spehn received his BFA from the University of Michigan School of Art, Ann Arbor, MI. He has exhibited at museums and institutions including Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, St. Louis, MO; Daum Museum of Contemporary Art, Sedalia, MO; Saarländisches Künstlerhaus, Saarbrücken, Germany; Centre d'art Contemporain, Metz, France; and more. His work is in numerous public and private collections: Saint Louis Art Museum, St. Louis, MO; Albright Knox Museum, Buffalo, NY; Daum Museum of Contemporary Art, Sedelia, MO; Temple University, Philadelphia, PA; among others.
