Pentimenti is pleased to present our final exhibition of the year, Flow States, a solo exhibition by Lauren Mabry. In Flow States, Mabry celebrates the beauty of uncertainty and the delicate harmony within moments of change in her latest works. The works convey movement, transformation, and precision, reflecting her ongoing exploration of color, surface, and form. Through her process-driven approach, Mabry’s practice remains dynamic, fluid, and ever- evolving.
In this exhibition, the series Flow States evokes the sensation of fluid, almost liquefied forms. The artist explores the use of repeating shapes in bold, solid colors, maximizing the versatility of each composition. In the series Dark Luster Flow, Mabry envelops each work in a richly chromatic glaze, creating surfaces that convey both depth and luminosity. In contrast, the series Weathered White Flow features a distinctive glaze effect that gently cascades over geometric ceramic forms.
The work in the project room, Dual Flow, is dedicated to Karen Thuesen Massaro’s Glaze Flow Block series, created during her residency at Kohler Arts/Industry in 1976. Dual Flow explores two key intersections: the base, a common tool in ceramic manufacturing used to measure glaze viscosity, and the glaze drips. This series represents a reimagined interpretation of Massaro’s work, blending her vision with Mabry’s fresh perspective on the sculptures created in 1976.
Lauren Mabry’s work engages deeply with artistic tradition, from the gestural mark-making of Abstract Expressionism to the process-driven focus of Postminimalism. While pushing beyond these influences, she continues to explore the imagined realms of art grounded in materiality.
